It’s no secret that Gabbar’s Bar & Kitchen, the Bollywood themed restaurant at Ho Chi Min Sarani, Kolkata is one of my favourite places to eat, in the city. So when I went to check out their brand new menu, I was super excited to see what new drama on the plate were on offer.
The new menu sounds as cool as liquid nitrogen, which by the way, they use very liberally. I love their presentation, decor and staff behaviour and knowledge. But what I love most about Gabbar’s Bar & Kitchen is certainly the food.
As the food and drinks started rolling out, one after another, in quick succession, I was awed by their offering over and over. My favourite thing about this place is their kitschy and quirky way of plating up. Their style and oomph is such that it elevates a plate of food to a visual delight, without compromising on the taste or the functionality of it.
Khaw Suey Mela, the coconut-milk based Burmese Soup, is one of my favourite things, but the fact that the various condiments were served in a mini ferris wheel, got me as excited as a kid and literally left me giggling and making it go round and round. I absolutely love how Gabbar’s makes the food interactive and engaging, and compels one to sit up and take notice of the food.
The menu and the decor of this place is the perfect marriage of quirk and Bollywood. Their food looks spectacular. The desserts tasted like heaven. There’s nothing more I could have asked for, at least for that evening.
Some of my favourites from their new menu is of course the Jai Thalaiva, which is Kothu Paratha with a spicy Mutton curry, the Papdi Chaat V 2.0 which is just an upgraded and crispier version of the humble street food and the Babumoshai from Mexico, which is Soft Tacos with a Tandoori Fish filling. Of their drinks, my recommendation would be the Espresso Sangria, and I can just sit and have endless cups of it!
